gas

OK...Exxon made a profit AGAIN of like, a gabifreakinzillion dollars and our prices are higher than ever? Soon, I'm going to be back to the day of looking under sofa cushions for gas money. I think that I'll invest in a horse instead...

...I'm just sayin'.

Yeah, that supply and demand stuff works...

I have an AMAZING idea! Let's find oil in our own country! I know, I know, it makes more sense to make ethanol and use our food supply for transportation, but hear me out. There is a reason food prices are SOARING: we are encouraging farmers to grow ethanol (which is actually not as clean or efficient as gas). If we build some NEW refineries (which we haven't been allowed to do in 30-40 years) we could actually make it a whole lot more efficiently and get it in our hands quicker without paying foreign countries a premium. Heck, if we could get fewer taxes on gas (currently it's about 50 cents and some candidates want it doubled) we could make it way, way more affordable. But, here's the rub. We just passed mandates to make sure vehicles are more efficient by a certain date, but there is a pilot program that is charging citizens based on the miles that they drive (GPS mandated), as well as taxing you on the gas that you use. So the gov't will tax us every which way from Sunday if we let 'em. The only way to make sure prices come down is to have fewer taxes and mandates to let the FREE MARKET decide who makes a profit (which shouldn't be a dirty word, by the way). At least no one is talking about taking profits away to fund bigger gov't (it's usually referred to as communism). Oh, they are? Damn it to Little Rock!

I'm not too worried about our taxation levels, but I gotta second tider's notion that ethanol is a dumb idea. I think ethanol is more of a political phenomenon than an energy source. You can get lots of votes in the heartland if you support ethanol, and politicians of every stripe do it. John McCain (who I basically like, this is not a slam) once joked for reporters, "Sure I like ethanol. I have a nice, tall glass of it every morning for breakfast." Hillary and Obama both support it, as do Bush and McCain.

I'm all about energy independence, but not through ethanol. No nukes, either, tider! How about we drive less? A modest proposal.

not too worried about taxation? Must be nice making millions, but us little people don't want to give up money that is REALLY OURS ANYWAY. It isn't the governments to give to people too lazy to work, or illegals, or drunks, or obese or anything. Private charity. Church programs. Volunteer work. There are plenty of ways for people to get what they need without being a dependent of the govt. Because they are being dependent on ME. No thanks.
